The flag of New Caledonia is a tricolour featuring three equal horizontal bands of blue, red, and green with a yellow disc overlying the border of the hoist side. The yellow disc features a black and white rendering of a stylised tribal emblem, which represents the Kanak people, the indigenous inhabitants of the island.
The blue band represents the ocean that surrounds New Caledonia, while the green band represents the country's lush vegetation and the red band represents the blood shed by those who fought for independence. The yellow disc represents the sun and represents the bright future that the people of New Caledonia aspire to achieve.
The flag was created in 2010, replacing the previously used "floral" flag which was in use since 1988. The floral design featured a central emblem of a stylised yellow iris and two branches of "bleue de France" flowers, representing the two main groups of settlers in New Caledonia – the French and the Kanak, respectively.
